Thornbury Castle, though not as grand as Disney’s Cinderella castle, offers opulent accommodation in South Gloucestershire. The historical castle, once frequented by King Henry VIII and Queen Anne Boleyn, has been carefully preserved for today’s visitors.

Now a plush hotel, it provides a romantic getaway with four-poster beds, heavy, gold-tasselled curtains and sparkling chandeliers. Each suite blends original Tudor elements with modern amenities, including a contemporary bathroom with walk-in rainforest shower, Molton Brown toiletries, and a cosy robe and slippers. For a truly enchanting stay in the Cotswolds, Thornbury Castle is a must-consider option.

The Painswick

An hour and 20 minute drive from Bicester Village.

The Painswick, a Grade-II listed boutique hotel, features 17 carefully updated bedrooms within the original Manor setting, preserving its charm. With uninterrupted Valley views, the property has a cosy sitting room with a balcony terrace, a games room complete with a pool table, and a downstairs parlour with comfortable chairs by the fireplace, perfect for bookworms.

As part of the same group as Calcot Manor and Barnsley House, The Painswick is the younger, quirkier, and more affordable sibling. Families can stay in spacious rooms, and dogs are welcome in select garden rooms.
