Belstaff | The Trialmaster Jacket Evolution

In anticipation of the opening of the new Belstaff boutique, we take a look back at the life of one of their most iconic styles, the Trailmaster.

Showcasing Belstaff’s long tradition for developing innovative materials, this edit tells the story of Belstaff through the decades.

1950s

TRIALMASTER, ROYAL MARINES MOTORCYCLE DISPLAY TEAM JACKET
The first wax cotton motorcycle jackets designed for civilian riders were originally developed and inspired by the style worn by Submariners of the Royal Navy in the 1940s. This jacket features a large angled map pocket on the left hand chest, with a small zip pocket on the right hand side, adorned with a RMMCDT club patch on the chest.

1963

STEVE MCQUEEN’S PERSONAL TRIALMASTER JACKET
Legend has it McQueen cancelled a date with his then girlfriend, actress Ali MacGraw, so he could stay home and wax this jacket. Belstaff purchased the jacket at Bonhams auction in 2006 and was one of the first pieces acquired for the Archive.

1980s

FORMULA750 NYLON MOTORCYCLE JACKET
This classic colour block 80s style jacket was made from a Polyurethane coated Nylon, an innovation in fabric to ensure it was lightweight and easy to wear. All seams are sewn and taped for weather proofing.

1990s

HIGH PERFORMANCE NYLON MOTORCYCLE JACKET
Referencing the original jackets from the 1970s, this bold green jacket has a reflective belt and unique pivot sleeve construction for high performance and comfort.

2000s

WATERPROOF BELFLEX NYLON MOTORCYCLE JACKET
The Belflex waterproof jacket features reflective piping inserted into the sleeve seams for safety and style.
