How to shop the sales

We asked Personal Shoppers from across the Collection for their expert advice on how to make the most of the extra savings. Take notes…

01

Look for key pieces

Every wardrobe needs heavy-lifters – think classic coats, bags and hardworking boots – and when it comes to sourcing them, our mantra has always been quality over quantity. There’s no point taking advantage of the additional savings if it’s just going to sit in your wardrobe. Something like a timeless black blazer – that you can dress up or down – is a great example of an investment piece you'll grab for time and time again.

Whilst trying things on, do a mental check of some of your most-worn items – will the item you’re considering work well and update existing favourites in your wardrobe?

02

Don’t get distracted

When shopping the sales, we tend to get stuck on the savings rather than on what works for our wardrobes – leading to those more impulsive purchases. Instead, opt for pieces you need rather than simply want. Ask yourself: what’s missing from my wardrobe? "The sales are always a good opportunity to find those investment pieces,” says La Roca Village stylist, Jamal Sinno. Focus on what’s been on your wish list for a while – you might just find that perfectly tailored shirt or a do-it-all tote bag at an extraordinary price!

03

Get ready to invest

While it helps to have a budget in mind, be prepared to stretch it on occasion for something that strikes a sartorial chord. “The one that got away seems to last longer than buyer’s remorse,” says Bicester Village stylist, Maxine Cywan. “I have regrets about things I walked away from because they were a little more than I originally wanted to pay – there’s one jacket I still look out for three years later in case it pops up.”

Shop with a focus, ideally with a wish list of what you’d like to walk away with, but don’t be afraid to let your heart rule your head.

Feel-good fashion

Investment pieces need not be boring. Evoke delight through your wardrobe and consider styles that will raise a smile every time you wear them. “Buy what you love, what makes you feel special, and don’t be afraid to let your heart rule your head”, says Maxine. “You may not need another handbag or pair of glittery shoes but if they make you feel happy just trying them on and looking in the mirror then you actually do need them because they spark joy.”

Fashion is such a strong way of expressing yourself so we’ll nurture what makes our guests unique.

Out-of-season pieces

While you’re probably reaching for your cosiest jumpers and thermal underlayers, sales offer the perfect excuse to get ahead on those future season purchases. Before hitting the Village, cast your mind forward to the warmer months, where sunglasses, swimsuits and sandals reign supreme. From classic linen silhouettes to those on-trend straw bags and crocheted beach cover-ups, you’ll often find real gems when shopping out of season.

06

Seek out showstoppers

Think ahead and take the opportunity to invest in beautiful silhouettes that you can depend upon when the next big occasion arises. “There’s nothing worse than being invited to a party or smart event and finding you don’t have anything dressy in your wardrobe – that’s when you may rush out and last-minute panic buy something you don’t love,” says Maxine, who believes in building a wardrobe for every eventuality, so that you’re never caught off guard.

07

Suit your style

If you like to dip into the trends, try to choose looks in the sales that resonate with your personal style codes and that will stand the test of time. When in doubt, Maxine suggests turning to the season’s forever florals, animal prints and bohemian silhouettes. “The sportswear trend also shows no sign of disappearing, and remember black and white never go out of fashion,” advises the stylist, who recommends investing in an en blanc or tonal palette of pale grey, cream and white for all seasons.

If you buy well in good fabrics and in styles you feel fabulous in, the pieces won’t date and can always be given an on-trend twist with the right accessory.

08

Branch out

People have such a specific perception of themselves, but often it’s a stranger’s opinion that helps us decide whether a piece works or not. Feelings can’t be bought, so finding a piece that attracts lots of compliments can really transform how you feel. "Fashion is such a strong way of expressing yourself, so we’ll nurture what makes our guests unique – even pushing them out of their comfort zones and steering them towards an eye-catching colour or design," adds Jamal.

09

Enlist an expert

Insider knowledge is key if you want to make the most of your visit. “We’ll have a session where we run through a client’s wish list: what are they looking for, which event are they going to, how are they going to style it? That way, they avoid buying for the sake of buying,” says Jamal. “We’re like a data bank for the Village – we spot the most amazing pieces and can check sizes for guests before they even arrive."

The Personal Shopping team are a great tool. They can select, reserve and advise you when treasure hunting through our Village sales.
