Seen all over the catwalks for Spring/Summer 2023, feel-good colours are having their moment. Right on hue: coveted fashion stylist, Katie Felstead, shares her top tips on how to spark joy with this technicolour trend, no matter your style.
Accentuate with accessories

By far the easiest way to introduce colour into your routine is to “choose brighter, bolder accessories,” says Katie. Handbags, belts and mismatched jewellery can all be added or subtracted from outfits, depending on your mood.

“I'm also rather fond of brightly coloured shoes.” Strappy sandals and statement sneakers are trending this season, but anything that complements your favourite accessories and makes you feel great is sure to be a worthy investment.

Find your match

“Find a colour you truly like” and curate a tonal palette that you can wear in full or cool down with muted colours, suggests Katie.

Trends can be influential, but it’s important to choose the colours that you feel your best in. “If you feel no affinity with baby blue, then don't buy it. If you prefer sunnier colours, go for those.” As with the tip above – you can always use accessories to tap into trending colours if that’s important to you.

A strong cerise structured jacket, a powder pink sweater or a statement trouser in the hottest pink are all on-trend and breathe life into a summer wardrobe.

It's not all or nothing

It takes confidence to style your entire look in colour, especially if you’ve always leaned towards more muted tones. “Don’t think it has to be head-to-toe; it doesn’t,” says Katie. “If, like me, you prefer a dark and more neutral palette, just opt for one piece.”

Contrasting neutrals against colourful separates is an easy way to pare back brightness. For total newbies, you can even use make-up (a bold lip, perhaps?) to give you that effortless pop of colour confidence.

It’s thought that warming reds and oranges are set to bolden our spirits, while cooler blues and greens are known to calm. This dress from Sandro is serving all the right energy for us this season.

Trust your instinct

There’s certain colours we have an emotional connection with – ones we’ll gravitate towards based on how it makes us feel or the experiences we’ve had when wearing them. “I have a lot of red in my wardrobe. It's bold, it's fiery…I definitely feel more powerful when I wear it,” says Katie.

That lucky blue shirt you pull out for interviews? There might just be something in it. So, look to your go-to pieces and start building a feel-good palette from there.

I have a lot of red in my wardrobe. It's bold, it's fiery. It's a ‘watch out’ colour. I definitely feel more powerful when I wear it, and conveniently - it works well with black.

Try a pop of pink

As the colour of the moment, the obsession with pink is continuing apace – and it’s one which everyone can embrace. “Dip your toes before proceeding full tilt. You have to be pretty brave to go head-to-toe pink, but that isn't to say it doesn't work brilliantly,” suggests Katie.

Start by adding versatile separates into your rotation and build from there. “A strong cerise structured jacket, powder pink sweater or statement trouser in the hottest pink are all on-trend and breathe life into a summer wardrobe.”
