The Salmon of Knowledge

In ancient Irish mythology, legendary hunter warrior Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Finn Mac Cool) caught the Salmon of Knowledge in the River Boyne, in County Meath.

The salmon had acquired all the world’s knowledge and, when Fionn ate it, that knowledge passed to him. The Salmon of Knowledge is a story told to every schoolchild in Ireland and is as close to our hearts as it is to our location.

This is the second Fionn sculpture in Kildare Village: his hounds Bran and Scéolang are subjects for a sculpture made for the village’s opening in 2004. Both sculptures are by Michael Cooper.

The stele or slate next to sculpture features text in the medieval Irish alphabet, Ogham, which is read from the bottom up and reads ‘bradán feasa’ which means Salmon of Knowledge.
