The Collection
The collection of the Modemuseum Hasselt (Fashion Museum Hasselt) counts just about 18,000 items ranging from clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories to undergarments.
The Modemuseum Hasselt (Hasselt Fashion Museum) collection has approximately 18,000 items, including clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories and underwear. These objects provide a picture of Western fashion history from 1750 to today. The collection policy is aimed at acquiring and preserving both historical clothing and pieces from contemporary designers in the most optimal conditions.
The initial collection of Modemuseum Hasselt consisted of the collection of the Romanian scenographer and costume designer Andreï Ivaneanu (1936-1989). Since 1989, his collection has been further supplemented with purchases and donations. During the 1990s, the Hasselt Fashion Museum received some historical masterpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. 20th century pieces range from haute couture and formal wear to ready-to-wear. In addition to clothing from international fashion houses, Modemuseum Hasselt also collects specific clothing from Hasselt values such as Jeurissen, Moray and Quetin. This line is continued in the collection policy on contemporary fashion, whereby creations by Limburg designers such as Martin Margiela and Raf Simons receive extra attention.
The website of Modemuseum Hasselt provides access to a selection of 250 collection pieces that give an impression of the core collection. These pieces are not on permanent display, but are shown in temporary exhibitions. Modemuseum Hasselt does not have a permanent display of the collection. Between two exhibitions, Fashion Museum Hasselt closes for a month.
