FROM GENK TO MAASMECHELEN VILLAGE
Historic sites and heathland
Day one
Stay: Hotel Stiemerheide
A fairway-fringed hideaway on the edge of Belgium’s only national park, where cottage charm meets wellness and wild, trail-laced nature – all within easy reach of the city. 3600 Genk
Lunch: El Verde
"Kick off the weekend at El Verde with a plant‑based breakfast and a really good coffee to slowly wake up,” recommends Jani. With a sun-drenched terrace, a menu rooted in local and seasonal vegetarian produce and a kitchen with a conscience, it’s the perfect feel–-good spot. 3600 Genk

Cultural fix: C-Mine
“You can’t go to Genk without visiting the mines,” Jani says. A former coalmine turned cultural powerhouse, C-Mine brings together galleries, design studios and a cinema, with a packed year-round programme of events. And his top tip? “Go underground and explore the old mining tunnels,” with the interactive C-mine Expedition. 3600 Genk
Cycling paths: Hoge Kempen National Park
Borrow a bicycle from the hotel and head straight into Hoge Kempen national park, where ancient pine forests, violet heathlands and golden dunes give way to miles of winding trails. 3600 Genk
Dinner: Moonstone
Overlooking the Spiegelven golf course, Moonstone is a favourite for ingredient-led cooking and a refined take on the classics: reimagined North Sea crab bisque and truffle risotto topped with parmesan Parmesan foam. “I had an amazing meal there – perfect to end the day,” Jani enthuses. Shop: Sandro
One of Jani’s favourite boutiques for “must‑have spring and summer pieces,” this Parisian label has made undone elegance its calling card, underpinned by clean cuts and an instinctive sense of colour. Maasmechelen Village
Shop: Sunglass Hut
Sun out or not, the edit here is always worth a browse. A global eyewear authority since 1971, the brand has a knack for a great curation, from understated frames and heritage classics to the season's sought-after drops. Maasmechelen Village
Shop: Selected
The Danish label that’ has built its reputation on getting the basics right. Rooted in Scandinavian simplicity, with a focus on unfussy tailoring, fine weaves and a sense of everyday ease, it’s a brand to rely on each season. Maasmechelen Village
Lunch: Balena Bar en Osteria
A mix of Italian soul and French finesse, this Genk gem blends culinary traditions in a welcoming setting of warm natural materials, with an open kitchen and cocktail bar guided by two alumni of acclaimed Belgian establishments. 3600 Genk
Historic meander: Thor Park
Once one of Belgium’s most productive collieries, Thore Park has reinvented itself as a sweeping innovation campus. Vast engine houses turned technology hubs, vertiginous pit heads and open green spaces combine to form one of Genk’s most striking – and surprising – places to spend an afternoon. 3600 Genk
Dinner: Robijn
A serious wine list in a candle-lit, convivial setting. The kitchen plays a strong supporting role, but it’s the clever curation of bottles that keep keeps people coming back. 3600 Genk
