A stylist’s guide to menswear trends for spring
STYLE27 April 2023
A new season typically means a fresh rotation of pieces to bring us up to date. This spring, stylist Katie Felstead shows us how to tap into the latest menswear trends with a few new additions, maximising our wardrobe’s existing line-up.
Double up on denim

A forever style staple, but with renewed energy this season. “In the industry, men have been wearing double denim for years and it's finally trickling down,” says Katie. The best thing about it? “You probably have the pieces in your wardrobe already, but don't ever wear them together.” Plus, there really is no ‘wrong’ way to style it: ease in by mixing washes, cuts and textures or go for a full blue get-up for a classically cool look.

What was once considered to be a more formal cut, the V-neck has been reimagined in looser shapes, bolder prints, colour and patterns. Like this cashmere piece from Lacoste, perfect to layer on when the spring weather is being rather unpredictable.

V is for 'very much on-trend'

Despite being a high fashion favourite, the return of the V-neck is “another easy one to handle,” says Katie. “Seen by the likes of LOEWE, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, KENZO and Saint Laurent,” it’s advantageous on days when you want to play with layering (cue, spring) and for both smart and casual affairs. Whether cut into a slouchy, sleeveless vest or dressed in long sleeves to frame a shirt and tie, there’s endless curation to be had.

Ideal for layering

I love dressing up denim, it’s probably the most versatile fabric in fashion.

A 'short-cut' to warmer weather

Once considered to be “just for the beach,” shorts have recently found themselves working into our springtime rotation. "Shorts with jackets, shorts with longer coats.” Play with high-low styling to add some interest to your looks (while still mastering the trans-seasonal weather). “The brave among you can also go short-short, but really, a good, tailored city short, pleat or flat fronted will update just right,” says Katie.

Classic shapes are reimagined for the season ahead. We love this from GANT, an easy staple that’ll add instant elevation to any look.

New dimensions

Cropped jackets, short-shorts, and ankle-grazing trousers. This spring, it’s time to take things up a notch (quite literally) and experiment with cropped cuts. “I love the small, boxy proportions, which is something we don’t see much of on men – only on the runway.” Start by rolling up your favourite chinos to experiment with the look. Or add a cropped outer layer to your rotation to experiment with some fun new shapes this season.
