01

What are ‘culers’?

The Spotify Camp Nou isn’t the only stadium in which FC Barcelona has played. The field on Calle Industria, also known as La Escopidora, played host to the club’s matches between 1909 and 1922. It’s the origin of ‘culers’, the common description for Barça fans. It originated from busy matches, when fans sat on the top edge of a wall, allowing a row of spectators’ backsides (culs in Catalan) to be seen from the outside.

Did you know? Initially, the Calle Industria stadium had a capacity of 1,500 spectators. It was the first to have tiered seating and in 1916 a two-story grandstand was built to accommodate up to 6,000 ‘culers’.

02

The history of the Canaletas fountain

The Canaletas fountain is one of the best-known in the city. But why? In the 1930s, Barça fans used to gather in front of La Rambla newspaper’s editorial office, located near the fountain. At weekends, the office would hang a board on its façade with the match results and the ‘culers’ would gather to comment on them. Although the publication no longer exists today, Barcelona fans still make pilgrimages to the fountain to celebrate their club’s victories and titles.

Did you know? Legend has it that “whoever drinks from the Canaletas fountain returns to the city.” So, as well as the football tradition, it’s also known for the superstition that attracts would-be returning Barcelona visitors.

03

The new Spotify Camp Nou

Spotify Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe, with the aim to be one of the most modern in the world. The stadium’s renovation work plans to increase capacity from 99,354 to 150,000 spectators and will install a retractable roof to keep fans covered on rainy days. The new Spotify Camp Nou is expected to open in September 2026, but the stadium is considering reopening its doors in October 2025, with 66,000 seats available.

Did you know? Spotify Camp Nou’s capacity has varied since its opening in 1957. In 1982, it reached 115,000 people because – at the time – ‘culers’ were allowed to enjoy matches while standing up.

04

Barça is football history

There are two historical milestones that clearly speak of FC Barcelona's search for excellence since its founding. In 1899, Hans Gamper – a Swiss student living in Barcelona – decided to create a team to organise football matches with other expatriates. From that decision was born the fourth oldest team in Spain, only surpassed by Recreativo de Huelva (1889), Sevilla (1890) and Athletic Club (1898). What's more, of all the teams that have played in the Spanish First Division, Barça is one of three clubs that’s never been relegated.

Did you know? Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Leo Messi and Carles Puyol are some of the football stars who have passed through La Masía, the residence for the club’s promising young players.

Did you know? In 1910, a competition was held to find the club's crest. The current crest, with its subtle updates, is more than 100 years old.
