Many faces of Gala Dalí, by Jordi Bernadó

Photographer Jordi Bernadó takes us inside Púbol Castle in the footsteps of Gala and her fashion collection.

Gala Dalí’s life (and identity) can be narrated through black and white photographs by artists such as Cecil Beaton or Man Ray. According to Éluard, “Her gaze could pierce walls”. But how can an artist capture her magnetism today? Is it possible to portray the muse through the lens in 2024? As part of La Roca Village and Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation’s joint project to unveil Gala’s identity, Jordi Bernadó takes us inside Púbol in the footsteps of Gala and her fashion collection.

For the photographer, the legend of Gala Dalí stalks, invisible, the rooms of the Castle of Púbol. Gala’s memory inhabits the place and haunts it, pulling the strings of the show like a stage director. The legacy of a complex and irreverent mind lives on in the castle and, above all, in the outfits she wore as an aspect of her personal fiction. Pieces by Dior, Givenchy, Oleg Cassini and Loewe, among others. Designs that are the most essential gesture of Gala Dalí the character, the most intimate mask, the first layer of her theatricality.

Bernadó’s pictures focus on the dresses, portrayed as if the presence of the wearer were filtered through each one. This photo exhibit will open at Púbol Castle from 18 March. A teaser of the artistic installation that we can now visit at La Roca Village. Did you know that Gala Dalí sometimes scratched off her face in photographs? Walk through the Village to discover how the artist Jordi Bernadó recreates that same game of ambivalence in his photographs of the absent muse.
