A medieval quest

In Kuringen, at a stone's throw from Hasselt, lies Herkenrode Abbey. The history of this abbey goes back almost 850 years, deep into the Middle Ages. Today, the site has been fully restored to its former glory for you and your family to explore. Herkenrode Abbey offers three treasure hunts, each for a different age group. Children between 3 and 6 years old can embark on the ‘Out with the Unicorn’ family treasure hunt. Kids between 7 and 10 years old will love the ‘Hendrik's Secrets’ quest, where they will be asked to help medieval poet Hendrik Van Veldeke recover his memories. And older children between 10 and 14 years old can get their investigation fix with the exciting ‘Crime at the Abbey’ murder mystery, where they’ll solve a case by finding clues and analysing witness statements. A wonderfully engaging destination for the entire family!

In Koersel, a borough of Beringen, you can still find an authentic smalltown cinema. The Roxy Theatre is well known in Limburg for its authentic film experience. Check their programme to enjoy a fun family film after a day in the mines.

Go underground at the Mining Museum

On your visit to Maasmechelen Village, you’ll spot impressive buildings and towers from the region’s rich mining past. In Beringen, some of these buildings were transformed into a large mining museum. Join the family game and explore the coal mines as you complete a series of fun assignments together. Looking for some hands-on experience? Step into the underground simulator to experience what it was like working in the mine shafts over 30 years ago. Every first Sunday of the month, the museum hosts its Mining Sundays – a unique experience in which an ex-miner takes you on a tour through the old mining buildings at one of the best-preserved mine sites in Europe. Step into the pay hall to collect your wages, take a shower in the shower room, or peek into locker to see what the miners wore on a typical working day.

From soldier to skipper

At De Brug van Vroenhoven, get two experiences for the price of one! The museum offers two interactive experiences: one about the Second World War and one about Flemish inland waterways. The defence coordination bunker that houses the museum is the exact location where the Belgian chapter of World War II started in 1940. The youngest members of the family can learn all about the story by solving a series of educational riddles and tasks. When they’re done, the second interactive experience awaits to bring out their inner bridge builders and boatmen. Learn more about inland navigation and watch the ships pass by on the Albert Canal under the bridge as you get to work building a sturdy bridge and piloting a ship through a lock.
