Some tournament history
More than six decades after its founding, the tournament, popularly known as Godó, remains a favourite among its participants and tennis enthusiasts alike. Its beginnings are closely linked to the 1953 opening of tournament owner and host Real Club de Tenis Barcelona 1899’s new headquarters in Pedralbes. Its mission was to create a tournament to showcase Spanish tennis and the new competition inherited the seeds of the old International Championships, held in Barcelona.
Did you know? Norwegian Casper Ruud will defend his title at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, taking place from 12 to 20 April, after winning the 2024 trophy in his duel with Greek Stéfanos Tsitsipás.
The trophy’s secrets
The Count of Godó, Carlos Valls, wanted the cup that bore his name to exude personality and power, in keeping with the international standing of the competition. This magnificent work of neoclassical goldsmithing is full of symbolism and secrets: The lid is crowned by a tennis player performing a volley, the central body is reminiscent of ancient Roman cups and the oak base features four eagles that symbolise majesty.
Did you know? Rafael Nadal is the only player to have won for four consecutive years, from 2005 to 2009. He’s the most successful Godó player, with a total of 12 titles.
From the court to the Village
New-generation tennis players are linking up with the most coveted fashion brands to express their style on the court. As well as being the faces of brands’ campaigns, key Godó players are partnering with designers that best represent them. adidas sponsors Stéfanos Tsitsipás and Alejandro Davidovich, Armani sponsors Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Sonego, ASCIS sponsors Lorenzo Musetti and Álex de Miñaur and New Balance sponsors Jordan Thompson, to name just a few.
Did you know? Dressing like a tennis court star has never been easier. At La Roca Village, you’ll find sportswear and ready-to-wear from some of the sponsor brands, all waiting to volley straight into your wardrobe.
Tennis core
Tennis is known for its distinctive uniform – at Wimbledon, players can even be fined for not wearing white on the court. If you're a fan, you're in luck. The runways have taken garb from battling on the courts to new heights, ready to wear every day. As actor Zendaya showed during the Challengers press tour, polo shirts, cable-knit vests, pleated skirts and all-white looks are right on trend this spring.
Did you know? Jean René Lacoste, in addition to being the creator of his eponymous brand, was a French tennis player and winner of seven Grand Slam titles.
