However, right on our doorstep is the Cotswolds – quite possibly the prettiest region England has to offer. Aside from the obvious walks you can take to experience the breath-taking views, the region is home to some fantastic restaurants, cafés and pubs. So, make sure to try some of the best places to eat in the Cotswolds as you explore Bicester Village and beyond.

01

The Painswick Restaurant

All-day dining
The Painswick Hotel has all the charm you’d expect to find in this Cotswold town, about an hour and a half’s drive from Bicester Village. Inside this distinctive Palladian house you’ll find log fires, cosy corners and ever-so-stylish rooms. However, it’s the delectable seasonal menus at the Painswick Restaurant that you’ll be most interested in sampling.

With just the right balance of opulence and restraint, panelled walls, parquet wooden flooring and the abundance of natural light make for a beautiful setting. Head chef, Jamie McCallum, has created a modern, un-fussy menu of vibrant dishes with deep flavours and finesse. The six-course Tasting Menu paired with a flight of wines is sublime, and we hear there’s a great Sunday roast too. For one of the best afternoon teas in the Cotswolds, head there between 12 pm and 3 pm – Wednesday through to Saturday. Booking is compulsory!

02

Wilder

Fine dining
Everyone loves to be spoilt, and Wilder in Nailsworth provide just that experience with an enticing eight-course surprise tasting menu. Awarded three AA Rosettes and endorsed by the Michelin Guide, it’s easy to see why it’s become the epitome of fine dining in the Cotswolds.

The menu, which changes daily, is prepared using humble ingredients to create well-balanced, ambitious combinations. Wines are hand-picked to complement each course, so you don’t have the task of deciding. And don’t worry, they can cater for any dietary requirements, be it gluten or lactose-free, nut allergies, vegan and vegetarian.

It doesn’t stop there – Wilder offer accommodation in beautiful rooms and well-appointed apartments under the name Wild Garlic. So, you’ll only have a short walk to retire to your room...

03

Soho House & Co’s farmshop restaurant & cafe

Rustic dining
In the heart of Bicester Village, a charming farmhouse ambiance with polished cobblestone floors and exposed rustic beams awaits. Offering a menu to delight as much as the beautiful décor inspires, the food is a tribute to the surrounding Oxfordshire countryside, offering British local and seasonal plates from morning until evening.

Whether it’s a cosy refuge on a cold winters’ day or a relaxing spot on the outdoor terrace during summer, farmshop restaurant & cafe is the perfect place to enjoy your favourite drink alongside classic hearty fare.

As part of the Soho House family, farmshop restaurant and cafe shares strong British roots and is a neighbour of nearby Soho Farmhouse. Set on 100 acres of serene Cotswolds countryside, Soho Farmhouse is a picturesque destination offering food, drink, wellness and outdoor activities – and could easily be mistaken as one of the most idyllic villages in the country.

04

The Old Butchers

Casual dining
Quirky décor, colourful chairs, ice bucket and colander lampshades! Located in the heart of the Cotswolds and about a 45 minute drive from Bicester Village, The Old Butchers is a must-visit for anyone looking for a bite to eat in Stow-on-the-Wold. As the name suggests, this former butcher's shop has been converted into a casual dining restaurant with a warm, inviting atmosphere and a menu designed with a nose-to-tail ethos. The terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine from their extensive list or sample one of the delectable desserts. It’s no wonder this hidden gem has been included in the Michelin Guide.
05

The Double Red Duke

Gastropub
The Double Red Duke is a delightful pub in the pretty village of Clanfield, just 30 minutes from Oxford and 50 minutes from the Village. Picture a sixteenth century building with an crackling open fire and seriously good-looking interiors. With red leather bar stools, fern-green velvet banquettes, a plant-filled conservatory and fun red-and-white parasols on the terrace – it’ll soon become one of your favourite places to eat in the Cotswolds.

Steak is the speciality here, where it’s expertly cooked on an open flame. You’ll find everything from feasting menus to traditional Sunday roasts, and haute cuisine mains to classic pub grub. Don’t skip on pudding either, where each dish has a specially selected wine to accompany it. We have our eye on the apple and blackberry crumble with a Sauvignon Beerenauslese.

06

Bakery on the Water

Bakery and Café
A lively market town in the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water is genuinely idyllic, with a host of restaurants and cafés to sit, relax and soak up its old, golden sandstone homes, set beside the gently flowing River Windrush. Only an hour from the Village, it’s a must-visit destination.

A spot that we love is Bakery on the Water, a family-owned artisan bakery with its roots going back a hundred years. In the morning, expect the delicious smell of croissants and freshly brewed coffee. Classic brunch foods are served until 11 am, and if you visit during the afternoon, you can enjoy their delectable range of sandwiches, quiches and pasties. They also offer a splendid afternoon tea, complete with freshly baked scones. Don’t mind if we do!

07

The Old Swan

Country Inn
Located just a stone’s throw from Oxford (15 miles to be exact), the Old Swan is nestled in 65 acres of idyllic grounds in the village of Minster Lovell – making it the perfect place to unwind after a successful day of perusing the boutiques in the Village. This quintessentially English inn seamlessly blends the rural charm of its historic setting with contemporary design, luxurious comfort and delicious menus crafted from the finest seasonal produce.

We recommend trying one of their speciality pies, each baked to order and filled with the best quality ingredients (with a non-wheat-based pastry for those wishing to avoid gluten), accompanied by its own specially selected beer pairing.
