How to fall in love with running, according to the experts

From ASICS to Under Armour, we asked some of our favourite brands for their advice on how to make running a full-time hobby.

01

Run in the right shoes

The foundation of a comfortable and enjoyable run is good activewear. From injury prevention to improved performance, ASICS reminds us that you should invest in clothing that fits correctly and offers the support you need. For a winning look, we recommend picking up a few pieces that spark joy when you reach for them – think performance-enhancing sneakers, breathable tops and shorts made from a technical, sweat-wicking fabric.

02

Switch it up

It doesn’t matter how scenic your regular route is or how luxurious the gym showers are; following the same routine every day can become pretty mundane. For a renewed sense of challenge and excitement, consider regularly switching up your location, terrain or type of training.

03

Make running social

Running doesn’t have to be a solo sport – have you seen the crowds at your local parkrun? Inviting a friend along or joining a group can be a great motivator. ASICS suggests searching for a local running club – most have sessions designed for different abilities.

04

Get yourself a soundtrack

For those days when you’re just not feeling it, a great playlist can help get you into the right headspace. Rock, pop, dance or techno – compile your favourite tunes into one no-skips playlist.

05

Measure your success

Setting yourself running goals is a great way to track your progress and stay motivated. Whether you’ve completed the first day of Couch to 5K or just signed up for your next race, "to be on a starting line is worth celebrating," suggests Stephen Scullion, Irish Olympian and Under Armour professional athlete.

06

Educate yourself

For Under Armour professional athlete Stephen, the key to enjoyment and success is “knowledge of the sport.” From how to fuel yourself to the all-important cool-down, spend a little time familiarising yourself with the basic principles of running.

07

Tough runs have their place

"Resilience is built on the disappointment," says Stephen. Reminding us that running isn't about perfection – you're going to have tough days. Over time you'll find that the more challenging runs help build the physical and mental resilience needed to run further, faster and make you feel ready to conquer the world.
